Tales of an Elementary School Teacher
Once upon a time, I was looking for a way to leave my 9-5 and to set myself up for a future as a digital nomad. I stumbled across a course that immediately struck my fancy.
Proofread Anywhere. It was a course to teach people to proofread transcripts for court reporters.
I could do that!
I am a total grammar nerd. I love the English language. I even loved diagramming sentences in school. Who does that?
Me, that’s who!
I have always been the go-to person for friends and family who need proofreading help…for free! Here was a way to do that and make actual money?
Yes, please!
Wait! Is this too good to be true?
I didn’t sign up right away. I wanted to be sure that it wasn’t a scam. It was promising to not only teach me the ins and outs of proofreading court transcripts, but it was promising to tell me where and how to find clients as well. It sounded a little too good to be true.
I did quite a bit of research, and once I was satisfied that it was on the up and up, I took the plunge.
And I was not disappointed.
I started the course in February of 2017. I landed my first client in June, just in time to work during our vacation to Prague. By October, I had replaced my monthly salary.
I must, however, warn you. The course creator, Caitlyn Pyle herself, is upfront that this is not a typical result. The course itself is billed as a side-hustle, but when I do something, it is go big or go home.
That was 2017, and today I continue to provide this service to my clients (as well as writing and general proofreading).
How You Can Do This Too
I highly recommend the Proofread Anywhere course to anyone with excellent grammar who would like to add a source of income or work from home. And of course, for anyone who wants to be a digital nomad.
I took the Transcript Proofreading course which was the only one available at the time. Now, there is a General Proofreading course that has a much broader appeal. While the Transcript Proofreading course focuses on proofreading legal transcripts, which takes longer to master, the General Proofreading course will set you up with the skills to grow a business proofreading more general — and fun! — types of texts like books, blog posts, resumes, news articles, etc.
